Shining Through

The winter has come and with it the happy month of Kislev. Finally, black tights and cozy sweaters! Most people who say they love winter really just love the clothes. 😉

I find that in these darker months my brain goes back and forth- between positive and negative thoughts. Like the darkness, the feelings around me can be gloomy and come in earlier and quicker than other times. 

But Chanukah's power is the ability to shine light through the shadows. It's not for nothing that it comes in the middle of the winter when there is so much physical darkness which can lead to emotional dullness. Many people don't feel as productive in these days. Before I turn around, it's already too late to daven mincha.

But Chanukah tells us that the light is coming. The feeling I get walking through the streets of Yerushalayim and seeing all the menorahs is so encouraging. Because, although we are each in our own houses or headspace, we come outside and light the candles at the same time. And we light not just one candle but we increase the light each night to tell us that we are not alone and we will get through this together. 

At times I feel alone in the battle for tznius as a purveyor of women's clothing. But then I remember all the words of appreciation for what we are trying to do here at EVERYWHEN and I know that there are many women and teens out there fighting the same fight. The few against the many- and we know who wins.

When I was a teacher, in my past life, one of my greatest joys was connecting to each student and bringing out their light.
